About This Expression
Blanton's Original Single Barrel stands as a watershed milestone in the history of American whiskey. Introduced in 1984 under the visionary guidance of master distiller Elmer T. Lee, it revived a struggling industry by introducing the world's very first commercially marketed single barrel bourbon. Lee drew inspiration from his early days at the distillery working under Colonel Albert B. Blanton, who would privately select "honey barrels" from the center of his favorite warehouse to bottle for visiting dignitaries and close personal friends. Rather than blending hundreds of casks together to achieve a homogenized profile, each bottle of Blanton's is drawn entirely from an individual charred oak barrel, celebrating the distinct micro-variations of wood, weather, and time.
The whiskey is produced at the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, an iconic distilling site situated along the Kentucky River that has maintained continuous distilling operations for over two centuries. Maturation takes place exclusively inside Warehouse H, a metal-clad aging structure built following the repeal of Prohibition. Because metal transmits exterior atmospheric changes much faster than traditional brick or stone, Warehouse H experiences intense seasonal temperature swings. These thermal fluctuations force the liquid deep into the staves of the American white oak during blistering summer days and draw it back out during frigid winter nights, accelerating the rich interaction between spirit and wood.
Blanton's is crafted from Buffalo Trace's higher-rye Mash Bill #2, combining sweet yellow corn with approximately twelve to fifteen percent rye alongside malted barley. Distilled through copper column stills and entered into new charred oak barrels at standard entry proof, each barrel matures for approximately six to eight years until reaching peak maturity as evaluated by the distillery's master tasting team. Because single barrels inherently possess nuanced differences, every individual bottle label is hand-inscribed with its specific barrel number, rick number, warehouse location, and bottling date, topped by the iconic collectible pewter horse and jockey stopper.
Bottled at 46.5% alcohol by volume (93 proof), Blanton's strikes an exceptional balance between accessible drinkability and layered aromatic weight. At 93 proof, the alcohol delivers enough body to carry decadent notes of caramelized sugar, vanilla bean, baking spices, and citrus oil without overwhelming the palate with ethanol heat. The approximate six to eight years of oak contact impart structure and pleasant drying wood tannins while preserving the vibrant sweetness of the underlying corn and the spicy pepper of the rye grain.
To fully appreciate the craftsmanship of a single barrel, Blanton's is best enjoyed neat in a Glencairn or tulip-shaped nosing glass after resting for five to ten minutes in the glass. A few drops of room-temperature spring water soften the proof, opening up hidden aromas of toasted brioche, nutmeg, and vanilla bean. For cocktail enthusiasts, it makes an exceptionally refined Manhattan or Old Fashioned, where its rye-accented spice effortlessly complements aromatic bitters and sweet vermouth.
This bottle is the quintessential choice for collectors and discerning whiskey lovers seeking an authentic taste of Kentucky history. Its iconic faceted bottle and storied single barrel pedigree make it an unforgettable centerpiece for celebrations, a prized addition to any home bar, and one of the most prestigious gifts in all of bourbon.
