Buffalo Trace is produced using the distillery's proprietary Mash Bill #1, a low-rye recipe containing corn, malted barley, and approximately ten percent or less rye. The new make spirit is barreled into heavily charred new American white oak casks—specifically Char #4, often referred to as "alligator char"—and aged for approximately seven to nine years. Batches are blended from no more than forty to fifty barrels at a time to maintain signature consistency and depth.
