About This Expression
Eagle Rare 10 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon is a masterclass in patient aging, representing one of the few remaining accessible bourbons to proudly carry a double-digit age statement. Originally created in 1975 by master distiller Charles L. Beam at the Four Roses distillery under Seagram's ownership to compete against Wild Turkey 101, Eagle Rare was later acquired by the Sazerac Company and found its permanent home at Buffalo Trace. Today, it stands as a celebrated benchmark for mature, oak-forward Kentucky bourbon that delivers remarkable complexity at an approachable proof.
Distilled and matured in Frankfort, Kentucky, at the Buffalo Trace Distillery, Eagle Rare spends a full decade resting inside traditional aging warehouses. The extreme climate of the Bluegrass State—with humid, scorching summers that push whiskey into the barrel staves and freezing winters that contract the spirit back into the cask—makes ten years of maturation a transformative journey. Barrels earmarked for Eagle Rare are typically situated on the middle and upper tiers of brick warehouses, where elevated temperatures encourage greater extraction of wood sugars, vanillin, and deep barrel char.
Eagle Rare is crafted from Buffalo Trace's low-rye Mash Bill #1, which blends sweet yellow corn with malted barley and a modest rye component of ten percent or less. The fermented mash is distilled through copper column stills and entered into new, deeply charred American white oak barrels. While previously bottled as a designated single barrel, the modern bottling line at Buffalo Trace transitions continuously from barrel to barrel, meaning each bottle is drawn from an individual cask with only nominal blending occurring during line changeovers, retaining individual barrel uniqueness.
Bottled at 45% alcohol by volume (90 proof), Eagle Rare provides an exceptionally refined and approachable drinking experience. The ten full years of barrel aging give the spirit a deep golden amber hue and an unmistakable maturity, laden with aromas of toasted oak, candied almonds, dark chocolate, and orange peel. At 90 proof, the alcohol remains remarkably well-integrated, allowing the intricate interplay of dry oak tannins, rich toffee, and leather to unfold across the palate without distracting heat.
Eagle Rare is best appreciated neat in a classic rocks glass or Glencairn to explore its sophisticated oak profile. Adding a small splash of cool water helps release secondary layers of honeyed corn, pipe tobacco, and dried fruit. It also crafts an extraordinarily luxurious Boulevardier or Manhattan, where the ten years of oak maturation provide a sturdy, wood-tinged backbone against bitter Campari and herbal vermouth.
This bottle is ideal for drinkers seeking the refined complexity of long-aged bourbon without aggressive cask-strength proof. It serves as an impressive gift for discerning hosts, a staple for serious home bars, and an outstanding bottle for those looking to graduate from entry-level bourbons to aged Kentucky aristocracy.
