About This Expression

Maker's Mark 46 is a pioneering innovation in modern bourbon maturation, marking the very first new major expression released by the historic Maker's Mark distillery since its founding in the 1950s. Conceived in 2010 by Bill Samuels, Jr., son of the distillery's founders, the goal was to create a bourbon with amplified wood spice, richer caramel, and greater intensity while preserving the signature softness and drinkability of the core wheated recipe. The result was an entirely new wood-finishing process developed in close collaboration with Independent Stave Company master cooper Brad Boswell.

The whiskey begins its life at the picturesque Star Hill Farm distillery in Loretto, Kentucky, surrounded by rolling hills and pristine spring-fed limestone water. The distillery is famous for its artisanal approach, including outdoor grain cooking, cypress fermentation vats, and hand-dipped red wax bottle seals. Maker's Mark 46 starts as fully matured standard Maker's Mark bourbon, aged approximately six years in new charred American oak barrels. The barrels are then emptied, fitted with ten seared virgin French oak staves suspended inside the cask, refilled with the mature whiskey, and returned to age in a unique temperature-controlled limestone cellar.

The magic of Maker's Mark 46 lies in "Stave Profile 46"—the forty-sixth experimental wood recipe tested by Samuels and Boswell. These French oak staves are seared with infrared heat rather than charred with direct flame, caramelizing the natural wood sugars deep within the dense European oak without adding bitter char notes. Maturing the secondary barrels inside a subterranean limestone cellar kept at a constant fifty-four degrees Fahrenheit prevents the spirit from extracting harsh wood tannins, allowing only the purest baking spices, toasted vanilla, and rich toffee to integrate over nine weeks.

Bottled at 47% alcohol by volume (94 proof)—higher than standard Maker's Mark—this bourbon possesses a noticeably fuller body and richer texture. The elevated proof carries the intense French oak influence with precision, delivering lush notes of cinnamon, toasted oak, nutmeg, creamy vanilla, and dark cherry across the palate. The wheated mash bill ensures a soft, rounded mouthfeel that softens the 94-proof alcohol presence into a warming, velvety finish.

Maker's Mark 46 shines brilliantly when served neat or over a single large ice sphere, which gradually chills the whiskey and coaxes out hidden nuances of dark cacao and caramelized pear. It is also an exceptional choice for classic stirred cocktails like the Old Fashioned or Boulevardier, where the French oak spice acts as a natural bridge to bitter amari and sweet vermouth.

This bottle is an essential addition for fans of wheated bourbon looking for an elevated, spice-forward tasting experience. Its handcrafted red wax aesthetic and innovative wood-finished profile make it a fantastic gift for whiskey enthusiasts and an indispensable bottle for any modern home bar.
