About This Expression

Krug Grande Cuvée 171ème Édition is the sublime embodiment of the House of Krug's founding philosophy, celebrated worldwide as the most generous, multi-layered, and complex non-vintage champagne in existence. Founded in Reims in 1843 by Joseph Krug, the house was built on a revolutionary dream: to craft the absolute fullest expression of Champagne every single year, regardless of annual climatic variations. Each numbered edition of Grande Cuvée represents a completely unique, annual creation that reinterprets Joseph Krug's vision of uncompromising excellence.

The 171ème Édition is centered around the 2015 harvest—a year marked by dramatic sun and drought in Champagne followed by late summer rains that yielded beautifully concentrated grapes. To elevate the base wine into the orchestral symphony that defines Krug, cellar master Julie Cavil composed the blend from an astonishing selection of 131 individual wines drawn from 12 different harvest years, with the oldest reserve wine dating back to the year 2000. These reserve wines make up approximately forty-two percent of the final blend, providing indispensable depth, maturity, and emotional resonance.

Krug Grande Cuvée 171ème Édition brings together 45% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay, and 18% Meunier sourced from premier and grand cru parcels. In keeping with Krug's time-honored heritage, every single base wine is vinified individually in small, neutral oak barrels, allowing each plot to express its singular character. Following blending, the bottles rested for seven full years on their yeast lees in the cool, dark chalk cellars of Reims, developing an incomparable richness and fine, creamy effervescence.

Poured into a Krug tulip glass, the 171ème Édition displays a luminous, deep golden hue with a lively, ultra-fine stream of bubbles. The bouquet is mesmerizing and opulent, filled with aromas of hazelnut praline, gingerbread, toasted brioche, candied citrus peel, marzipan, and ripe baked apple. On the palate, it delivers an explosion of flavors: ripe lemon, dried fruit, almond paste, honey, and subtle spice, underpinned by a vibrant, taut citrus spine and chalky minerality that culminates in an extraordinarily long, unforgettable finish.

Krug Grande Cuvée should be served between ten and twelve degrees Celsius. It is an astonishingly versatile gastronomic wine, pairing effortlessly with aged Comté cheese, Iberico ham, turbot with truffle butter, or roasted poultry.

This bottle is an indispensable treasure for champagne connoisseurs, an extraordinary gift for monumental achievements, and the undisputed pinnacle of multi-vintage blending artistry.

Composed of 131 individual wines spanning twelve distinct harvest years, Krug Grande Cuvée 171ème Édition delivers an orchestral depth of flavor that no single vintage could ever replicate. Over seven years of patient cellar aging on its lees imbue the champagne with fine, creamy effervescence and complex notes of marzipan, gingerbread, and roasted hazelnut. It pairs magnificently with aged Comté cheese, Iberico ham, turbot in truffle sauce, or roasted poultry with morels.
