About This Expression

Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs 2012 is one of the most revered, aristocratic expressions of pure Chardonnay in the world, celebrated as the ultimate pinnacle of elegance, finesse, and chalk-driven minerality. Created as Taittinger's prestige cuvée in 1952, Comtes de Champagne pays homage to the historic Counts of Champagne, particularly Thibaud IV, King of Navarre, who according to legend brought back the original Chardonnay vine cuttings from the Crusades in the thirteenth century.

Produced in Reims by the family-owned Champagne Taittinger, Comtes de Champagne is crafted exclusively from 100% white Chardonnay grapes sourced from five legendary Grand Cru villages across the prestigious Côte des Blancs: Avize, Chouilly, Cramant, Mesnil-sur-Oger, and Oger. This unique geological belt features pure Cretaceous chalk subsoils that provide exceptional drainage and infuse the grapes with incomparable linear tension, saline minerality, and crystalline purity.

The 2012 vintage is widely heralded by critics as one of the greatest Champagne vintages of the century. To add subtle richness and complexity, five percent of the blend was aged for several months in new French oak barrels before bottling. The wine underwent a monumental ten-year maturation on its lees inside the ancient Gallo-Roman chalk quarries (Crayères) beneath the Saint-Nicaise Abbey in Reims, eighteen meters subterranean. This decade-long lees contact yielded extraordinary aromatic complexity while maintaining dazzling youthful freshness.

Comtes de Champagne 2012 pours a radiant, shimmering pale yellow gold with an ultra-fine, persistent perlage. The bouquet is breathtakingly refined, wafting with scents of white blossom, candied lemon peel, ripe white peach, brioche, fresh hazelnut, and crushed chalk minerality. On the palate, it delivers an exhilarating balance of creamy, silky texture and electric citrus acidity, revealing notes of pear, almond paste, grapefruit, and pastry cream, followed by an endlessly long, saline, and crystalline finish.

Comtes de Champagne 2012 should be served at ten to twelve degrees Celsius in a tulip or white wine glass. It is an exquisite gastronomic champagne, pairing sublimely with fresh oysters, caviar, butter-poached lobster, or sea bass carpaccio.

This bottle is a holy grail for collectors of prestige Blanc de Blancs, a show-stopping gift for landmark celebrations, and one of the finest sparkling wines ever produced in France.

Crafted exclusively from 100% Grand Cru Chardonnay grapes harvested from the fabled Côte des Blancs, Comtes de Champagne 2012 is a breathtaking demonstration of chalk-driven minerality and crystalline finesse. A full decade of undisturbed lees aging in the subterranean Roman chalk quarries beneath Reims has endowed this prestige cuvée with aromas of white blossom, candied lemon, and toasted brioche that will continue to develop for another twenty years in a fine cellar.

To fully appreciate the crystalline complexity of Comtes de Champagne 2012, it is best enjoyed in a wide-bowled white wine glass rather than a traditional narrow flute. This allows the delicate aromas of white blossom, candied citrus, and toasted brioche to aerate and expand, revealing the pure mineral energy that only the chalk terroir of the Côte des Blancs can impart. It is an unforgettable wine for milestone celebrations and prestige dining.
