About This Expression

The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is an historic, genre-defining classic that fundamentally changed the landscape of modern single malt Scotch. Launched in 1993 by The Balvenie's legendary malt master David C. Stewart MBE—who spent over six decades perfecting his craft at the distillery—DoubleWood pioneered the technique of "cask finishing," or secondary wood maturation. By moving mature whisky from one type of oak to another before bottling, Stewart created a rich, multi-dimensional flavor profile that set the blueprint for the entire modern whisky industry worldwide.

Located in Dufftown in the heart of Speyside, The Balvenie is celebrated as one of the most traditional and artisanal distilleries in Scotland. It is one of the only remaining distilleries that still practices the "Five Rare Crafts" of whisky making: growing its own barley on the Balvenie Mains farm, operating traditional stone floor maltings where green malt is turned by hand, maintaining an on-site coppersmith to tend its distinctive swan-necked pot stills, employing a dedicated team of resident coopers to repair and toast casks, and entrusting its aging stock to a master malt blender.

The production of DoubleWood 12 Year is a masterclass in the synergy between two distinct cask types. The single malt spends at least twelve full years slumbering in traditional American oak ex-bourbon barrels and refill hogsheads, where it absorbs sweet vanillin, honeyed malt, and delicate coconut notes from the charred oak staves. Following this primary maturation, the liquid is transferred into Spanish European oak casks that previously held rich Oloroso sherry. The whisky rests in these sherry casks for an additional nine months to integrate dried fruit sweetness, nutty complexity, and warm spice before resting for three to four months in large oak marrying tuns to allow the distinct flavor components to harmonize seamlessly.

Bottled at 40% alcohol by volume (80 proof), The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 displays a warm, glowing amber hue. The aroma is a delightful tapestry of sweet dried fruits, Oloroso sherry, honeyed heather, and vanilla bean, laced with gentle cinnamon spice and toasted nuts. On the palate, the whisky is soft, mellow, and beautifully balanced, offering notes of dried apricot, toffee, cinnamon, toasted almonds, and sweet sherry, resolving into a warm, gently spiced, and lingering oak finish that comforts the palate without astringency.

DoubleWood 12 is best enjoyed neat in a tulip-shaped tasting glass, allowing its rich honey and sherry aromatics to unfurl with gentle warming in the hand. Adding a few drops of water highlights subtle nuances of green apple, toasted almond, and creamy butterscotch. It also serves as an outstanding base for an elevated Highball garnished with a strip of orange peel, where the carbonation lifts the delicate fruit and honey notes.

This bottle is universally cherished as an essential benchmark of Speyside single malts. It makes an infallible gift for any whisky lover, an inviting gateway for newcomers discovering single malt Scotch, and an indispensable daily luxury for seasoned connoisseurs.
