About This Expression

The Dalmore 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a regal, sumptuous expression of Highland single malt, revered for its bold, sherry-forward profile and opulent presentation bearing the iconic twelve-pointed Royal Stag emblem. Founded in 1839 by Alexander Matheson on the northern shores of the Cromarty Firth, The Dalmore came under the stewardship of the Clan Mackenzie in 1867, whose historic 1263 royal crest has adorned every bottle since. Under the legendary master distiller Richard Paterson, The Dalmore became synonymous with luxurious multi-cask sherry maturation and master blending across the globe.

Located in Alness in the northern Scottish Highlands, The Dalmore possesses one of the most unique and intricate stillhouses in Scotland. The distillery operates pot stills of differing shapes and sizes, fitted with water jackets around the spirit still necks that circulate cold water to induce intense internal condensation and copper reflux. This complex still architecture yields a heavy, muscular, and oily new make spirit packed with dark chocolate, orange, and espresso congeners, providing the ideal structural backbone to withstand extensive aging in fortified wine casks without being overpowered.

The Dalmore 12 Year Old is crafted through a distinctive two-phase maturation process. The spirit spends its initial nine years maturing in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels, which impart sweet vanilla, coconut, and honeyed malt notes. The whisky is then split: half remains in the ex-bourbon wood while the other half is transferred into rare, thirty-year-old Matusalem Oloroso sherry butts sourced exclusively from the historic González Byass bodegas in Jerez, Spain. After three years in these ancient sherry casks, the two parcels are married back together to harmonize before bottling, ensuring complete synergy between oak and malt.

Bottled at 40% alcohol by volume (80 proof), The Dalmore 12 pours a deep, radiant mahogany. The nose is decadent and seductive, filled with aromas of candied orange peel, dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, dried plums, and warm cinnamon. On the palate, it delivers a rich, velvety mouthfeel overflowing with flavors of Seville orange marmalade, vanilla pods, dark fruitcake, toasted almonds, and ginger, concluding in a medium-long, comforting finish of sweet dark chocolate and spiced wood that lingers gently on the palate.

The Dalmore 12 is best savored neat in a stemmed snifter or Glencairn glass, allowing its luxurious confectionery aromatics to blossom. A single cube of ice or a tiny splash of soft water enhances the sweet orange and cacao notes, making it an extraordinary after-dinner digestif paired with dark chocolate truffles, roasted nuts, or a fine cigar. Its approachable 80-proof strength ensures smooth, unhurried sipping that requires no acclimation.

This bottle is the quintessential choice for lovers of rich, sherried Highland single malts. Its dramatic Royal Stag crest and indulgent flavor profile make it a breathtaking gift for special occasions, a luxurious addition to any prestige bar, and an unforgettable milestone pour.
