About This Expression

Laphroaig 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is one of the most distinctive, polarizing, and unapologetically expressive spirits in existence. Known worldwide for its uncompromising motto—"Love it or hate it, there is no in-between"—Laphroaig 10 represents the quintessential definition of medicinal, coastal Islay peat smoke. For over two centuries, this historic distillery has remained fiercely faithful to traditional, labor-intensive production methods, producing a single malt that captures the wild, elemental essence of the Scottish Hebrides in every single dram.

Situated directly on the rugged southern coast of Islay in the village of Port Ellen, Laphroaig has been distilling whisky since 1815. The distillery is one of only a handful of remaining distilleries in Scotland that still operates its own traditional floor maltings. Approximately fifteen to twenty percent of the distillery's barley is hand-turned upon ancient stone malting floors and cold-smoked in kilns over hand-cut peat from the distillery's private Glenmachrie moss. This local coastal peat possesses a unique botanical composition rich in heather, moss, and decaying seaweed, which imparts Laphroaig's trademark notes of medicinal iodine, damp moss, and sea kelp.

Following fermentation in outdoor pine washbacks using soft, peaty water drawn from the Kilbride Dam, the wash is distilled through copper pot stills featuring unique flat-based spirit stills with long, upward-angled lyne arms. This still geometry encourages reflux while allowing heavy, phenolic compounds to pass through into the distillate. The new make is filled exclusively into first-fill and refill ex-bourbon American white oak barrels—principally sourced directly from Maker's Mark in Kentucky—and aged for ten full years in sea-washed dunnage warehouses sitting right along the Atlantic coastline where tides literally splash against the building foundations.

Bottled at 43% alcohol by volume (86 proof), Laphroaig 10 Year pours a pale, sparkling gold. The aroma is instantly recognizable across any room: an intense wave of medicinal peat smoke, sea salt, iodine, damp earth, and wood ash, balanced beneath by sweet vanilla cream, crisp green apple, and honeyed malt. On the palate, the whisky delivers an astonishing contrast of bold charcoal smoke and maritime salinity followed by a burst of creamy vanilla sweetness, sweet barley grain, and spicy cardamom. The finish is remarkably long, tarry, and smoky, drying the palate with clean ocean brine and lingering campfire embers.

Laphroaig 10 is best enjoyed neat in a Glencairn glass to experience its raw, untamed coastal power. Adding a splash of cool spring water works wonders, breaking the surface tension to unlock creamy notes of toasted marshmallow, lemon peel, and sweet cereal beneath the roaring smoke. It is also an essential secret ingredient for modern craft cocktails, providing a transformative smoky rinse in a Penicillin or Rob Roy.

This bottle is an essential rite of passage for every Scotch whisky explorer, an absolute must-have for peated whisky devotees, and an iconic addition to any discerning spirits collection.
