About This Expression
Oban 14 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a magnificent, coastal Highland benchmark that bridges the delicate fruit sweetness of the Scottish mainland with the rugged, maritime peat smoke of the Hebridean islands. Founded in 1794 by brothers John and Hugh Stevenson, Oban is one of Scotland's oldest and smallest licensed distilleries. Because the picturesque seaside town of Oban grew up directly around the distillery's stone walls, the historic site cannot physically expand, making its traditional, small-scale production an authentic living relic of eighteenth-century distilling craftsmanship.
Situated on the western coast of the Scottish Highlands where the mainland meets the Firth of Lorn, Oban operates just two small, lantern-shaped copper pot stills. These stills are connected to traditional outdoor wooden worm tub condensers, which submerge long, coiled copper pipes in cold sea air and circulating seawater. This old-fashioned condensing method cools the alcohol vapors slowly, reducing copper contact in the condensing phase and creating a distinctively dense, waxy, and muscular spirit with an unmistakable maritime character that modern shell-and-tube condensers cannot replicate.
Oban 14 is crafted from lightly peated Scottish malted barley mashed with pure spring water drawn from the nearby Loch Gleann a' Bhearraidh in the surrounding hills. The spirit is aged for fourteen long years in refill American oak ex-bourbon casks resting in coastal warehouses nestled against the cliffside. This fourteen-year maturation is deliberate; it allows the subtle peat smoke and malty grain sweetness to soften and marry with the salty Atlantic sea breezes that permeate the porous oak staves over more than a decade of coastal rest.
Bottled at 43% alcohol by volume (86 proof), Oban 14 Year pours a rich, shimmering olive gold. On the nose, it offers a sophisticated bouquet of dried figs, honeyed malt, ripe orange peel, sea salt, and a delicate whisper of wood smoke. On the palate, the whisky delivers an unctuous, coating mouthfeel packed with flavors of honeyed fruitcake, dark chocolate, sea salt caramel, autumn pears, and dry oak tannins, concluding in a long, dry, and elegantly salted finish with a lingering trace of peat embers and cedar.
Oban 14 is best enjoyed neat in a Glencairn glass, allowing the complex coastal aromatics to develop with gentle aeration in the hand. A small splash of still spring water softens the dry oak structure, revealing luscious notes of heather honey, creamy vanilla, and orchard fruits. It is also legendary as a food pairing whisky, matching sublimely with fresh oysters on the half shell, smoked salmon, or artisan sea-salted dark chocolates.
This bottle is an exceptional choice for connoisseurs who appreciate nuanced, coastal single malts that balance fruit, malt, and sea salt. It makes a distinguished gift for celebrations, a memorable milestone pour, and an essential bottle for any comprehensive Scotch collection.
