About This Expression

Talisker 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is an iconic, storm-tossed masterpiece celebrated worldwide as the quintessential maritime malt, proudly carrying the slogan "Made by the Sea." Founded in 1830 by Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill on the rugged, windswept shores of the Isle of Skye, Talisker is the oldest operating distillery on this legendary Inner Hebridean island. The whisky is famous among connoisseurs for its unmistakable signature: an exhilarating combination of sweet malt, coastal peat smoke, and an explosive burst of cracked black pepper that captures the wild spirit of the Scottish islands.

Perched on the edge of Loch Harport in Carbost, Skye, Talisker owes its unique profile to distinctive distillation hardware. The wash stills feature unique U-shaped lyne arms with small copper purifiers that capture and return heavier vapors back into the still for redistillation. Furthermore, the spirit is condensed through historic outdoor wooden worm tubs rather than modern shell-and-tube condensers. These worm tubs impart a distinctively rich, sulfur-free, and oily texture that gives Talisker its muscular, mouth-coating weight, volcanic character, and maritime depth.

Talisker 10 is crafted from Scottish barley peated to approximately twenty parts per million (ppm) using peaty water drawn from the Cnoc nan Speireag springs on the hillside above the distillery. The spirit matures for ten full years in American oak ex-bourbon casks resting in ocean-facing warehouses. The wild Atlantic storms and salt-laden sea air penetrate the porous oak casks over a decade, seasoning the whiskey with genuine sea salt, kelp, and oyster-shell minerality that reflects its island terroir.

Bottled at a traditional maritime strength of 45.8% alcohol by volume (91.6 proof), Talisker 10 delivers a vibrant, full-bodied sensory adventure. The nose is bright and pungent, bursting with aromas of sea salt spray, wood smoke, fresh oyster brine, lemon zest, and dried barley. On the palate, a warm wave of dried fruit, barley sweetness, and campfire smoke gives way to an explosive eruption of cracked black pepper across the back of the tongue. The finish is long, warming, peppery, and delightfully saline, lingering with notes of sweet barley, peat ash, and brine.

Talisker 10 is spectacular when enjoyed neat in a Glencairn glass to experience its raw oceanic energy. Adding a splash of spring water softens the peppery bite, releasing delicious secondary notes of smoked kipper, toasted vanilla, and green orchard apples. It is also an iconic pairing for freshly shucked raw oysters, where a small splash of Talisker poured directly into the oyster shell creates a transcendent culinary pairing, as well as a thrilling base for a smoky Penicillin cocktail.

This bottle is an absolute must-have for lovers of peated and coastal single malts, making it a thrilling gift for adventurous drinkers, an outstanding dram for fireside evenings, and an essential pillar of any comprehensive whisky collection.
