About This Expression

Don Julio 1942 Añejo Tequila is an iconic, globally celebrated monument of luxury tequila, widely recognized for pioneering the ultra-premium sipping tequila category. Created in 2002 to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of Don Julio González opening his first distillery—La Primavera—in 1942 at the age of seventeen, this legendary expression is handcrafted in tribute to his lifelong passion for artisanal agave cultivation and patient maturation. Packaged in an iconic, tall, slender amber bottle inspired by the pointed leaves of the agave plant, Don Julio 1942 is the gold standard of luxury nightlife and celebratory toasts worldwide.

The tequila is produced in the Los Altos (Highlands) region of Jalisco, Mexico, in the municipality of Atotonilco El Alto. The red, iron-rich volcanic soils and high altitude of Los Altos create extreme temperature swings between day and night, stressing the agave plants and causing them to accumulate higher concentrations of natural sugars. Don Julio harvests only 100% Blue Weber agave (Agave Tequilana Weber) grown to full maturity of seven to ten years, hand-trimmed by experienced jimadores to remove bitter green pencas.

The harvested agave piñas are slow-cooked in traditional masonry brick ovens (hornos) for seventy-two hours to gently caramelize the complex starches into sweet agave sugars. After crushing and fermentation with Don Julio's proprietary yeast, the liquid undergoes double distillation in stainless steel and copper pot stills, including the historic Pot Still No. 6. Don Julio 1942 is aged for a minimum of two and a half years in reclaimed American white oak ex-bourbon barrels, far exceeding the one-year legal minimum for añejo tequila.

Poured into a tequila flute or snifter, Don Julio 1942 displays a radiant, warm golden amber hue. The aroma is richly sweet and intoxicating, wafting with scents of warm caramel, rich vanilla bean, roasted agave, dark chocolate, and toasted oak. On the palate, it delivers a remarkably silky, velvety, and dessert-like mouthfeel, offering notes of butterscotch, roasted nuts, candied citrus peel, cinnamon, and oak char, concluding in an exceptionally smooth, sweet, and comforting vanilla-tinged finish.

Don Julio 1942 is designed to be savored neat in a stemmed snifter or Glencairn glass at room temperature. It requires no lime or salt, as its delicate caramel and roasted agave profile provides a complete, decadent tasting experience.

This bottle is the quintessential luxury centerpiece for milestone celebrations, VIP gifting, and high-end entertaining, representing the pinnacle of Los Altos tequila craftsmanship.

Don Julio 1942's extended two-and-a-half-year maturation in reclaimed American white oak barrels imparts rich notes of warm caramel, roasted agave, vanilla custard, and toasted oak that coat the palate in velvety luxury. Designed exclusively for neat sipping in a crystal snifter at room temperature, it represents the gold standard of celebratory luxury nightlife and refined Mexican agave craftsmanship.
