About This Expression

Green Spot Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey is an historic, beloved cult classic that represents one of the few surviving historical "whiskey bonder" brands from the golden age of Irish distilling. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Dublin wine merchants would purchase raw new make spirit from local distilleries, mature it in their own subterranean cellars in imported wine and fortified wine casks, and sell it under their own private labels. Green Spot was created by the Mitchell family—wine merchants on Grafton Street in Dublin since 1805—who used colored dots of paint on barrel heads to indicate maturation age, with green designating seven to ten years of aging.

Today, Green Spot is produced in partnership with the Midleton Distillery in County Cork, Ireland, under the strict supervision of the Mitchell family. It is crafted in the traditional Single Pot Still method using a mash of both malted and unmalted "green" barley. Distilled three times in massive copper pot stills, the spirit captures the signature creamy, heavy-bodied pot still character that has defined traditional Irish whiskey for centuries.

Green Spot is aged for between seven and ten years in a carefully calibrated wood marriage consisting of approximately seventy-five percent first-fill and refill American ex-bourbon barrels and twenty-five percent Spanish European oak Oloroso sherry butts. This deliberate wood balance allows the vibrant, crisp green orchard fruit notes of the spirit to shine brightly while absorbing subtle nutty sweetness, dried fruit, and warming oak spice from the sherry wood.

Bottled at 40% alcohol by volume (80 proof), Green Spot displays a bright, sparkling golden hue. The nose is fresh, fruity, and aromatic, bursting with notes of crisp Granny Smith apple, sweet malt, vanilla bean, toasted wood, and a lively prickle of pot still spice like clove and allspice. On the palate, it delivers a wonderfully creamy, coating mouthfeel filled with flavors of baked green apple, ripe pear, toasted hazelnut, vanilla cream, and gentle cinnamon, culminating in a clean, crisp, and delightfully spiced finish that lingers pleasantly.

Green Spot is best enjoyed neat in a Glencairn glass, where its aromatic green apple and pot still spice bouquet can be appreciated. Adding a splash of spring water brings out sweet chamomile tea, marzipan, and lemon zest notes. It also makes an exceptionally refined Irish Highball when mixed with quality ginger ale and a slice of fresh green apple, and pairs wonderfully with soft goat cheese, roasted poultry, or light seafood.

This bottle is an absolute treasure for lovers of traditional Irish whiskey and a charming, historically authentic gift for any spirits aficionado who values Ireland's rich bonding traditions.

Historically matured in the cool underground cellars beneath Dublin's streets, Green Spot retains a charming, old-world character that sets it apart from modern commercial blends. The balance between 75% ex-bourbon oak and 25% Spanish Oloroso sherry wood provides a perfect platform for the crisp green apple and clove spice of the pot still spirit to shine. It is an exceptional whiskey to serve alongside smoked salmon canapés, roasted poultry, soft goat cheese, or warm fruit tarts during dinner gatherings.
